Westbound coal train lead by an SD40-2 and Chessie GP40-2.
As he is clearing a coal train is coming off the Logan Subdivision onto the Kanawha Sub. with an SD40-2 and GP38.
The tower in the background has since been demolished.
Date: around July 20, 1992
Date is October 12, 1991 and former Nickel Plate #765 is pulling the New River Train at Kanawha Falls, W.Va.
I set up on the hillside at the big curve in town with my cousin taping the 30+ cars.
Caught this eastbound coming through the Gorge also in February 1993.
The second unit was specially painted for President George Bush's campaign and was numbered #1992. It survived till the late 1990's in that scheme was numbered #7812.
This train also had pushers, a GP40, SD50 and a CW40-8.
In 1994, NKP #765 was unable to pull the New River Train, so former Milwaukee Road #261 pitched in and put on a good show.
This was the last year the New River train was pulled by steam.
Date: October 15, 1994.
I also did this in black and white to add a little more nostalgia to it.
Sorry about the quality, but this is from February 1996 at Cotton Hill, West Virginia on the old CO main near Hawk's Nest.
This drag was powered by two SD40-2's on #1 crossing over to #2.
Yes there are Chessie Hoppers and the old CO Cantilever signal bridge...now gone.
Q302 gets going east with a Chessie GP40 leading a GP38.
As soon as 302 gets by a westbound empties comes flyin' through with a GP40-2 and SD40-2. Talk about having some good luck, if 302 had been going slower, I wouldn't have recorded the westbound.
Date: June 20, 1992
A very long Q452-07, a Miami, Fla. to Waycross, Ga. daily freight.
This train was 8,745 feet long and had 596 axles (147 cars).
August 7, 2008 at 8:28 p.m.
It was raining when this westbound was stopped at a stop signal for an unknown reason then he had trouble with the third engine, GP40-2, and finally got going.
Lots of old hoppers in this, Chessie in original paint.
Date: Mid August 1992
This is Q452-10 led by #7543 and #7396 going north at a pretty good clip just south of Dade City, Florida on the Wildwood Sub.
Date: October 10, 2008 at 8:30 a.m.
The last train of the day for me was Q601-08 with a UP engine in the lead (which explained the sick horn). Date is August 8, 2008 at 10:52 p.m.
Off in the distance was a big thunderstorm which moved in around midnight.
Also other railfans saying goodnight at the end.
On Saturday, August 1, 1992, this grain train came through with three SD40-2's elephant style.
I set up where the old yard used to be about a mile from the depot.
You'll hear the engineer call in for the signal at CS Cabin.
As the eastbound coal train continues, this westbound gets going off the bridge at Hawk's Nest to points west.
Late November 1991 is the date.
A GP38-2 leads 4 SD40-2's with a U30C sandwhich inbetween. All online and running.
CI Jacksonville dispatcher lining up a coal train from Grafton to Fairmont, W.Va. on March 19, 2007.
Intresting hearing since the Fairmont Sub. is not completely governed by signal indication except out of Grafton.
