In my opinion the Chambers Brothers do the best version of this song. There are 3 Chambers Bros versions of this song that I know of.. The 45 mix playing now, the album mix and then a much longer live mix I found on a Columbia compilation album.
Original "brown wax" promotional copy. It appears to be black wax until you hold it up to a light which you will see 30 seconds into this video. Soulful doo wop with a heavy bassline, clean snare and a brass horn section.. It doesn't get much better than this!
Very rare Velours 45. The only one rarer than this is Romeo, also on the Onyx label. The reason for the center hole chip is that someone put one of those metal center discs in the record. The person that owned the record before me made the mistake of removing it by hand and the center hole broke. Regardless, it's a rare record and a treasure to have in any condition.
Look closely at the label.... "The Wows Of Love". Interesting misprint. Technically this is a 2nd or third pressing, but it's by far the hardest version of this 45 to get. They pulled this one out of production quickly when they saw the misprint.
I love this song... This version was originally released on the Esta record label.. I believe they were called The Columbus 4 Pharaohs on that label. They redid this record for the Nanc label as The Egyptian Kings. They also released a few great records as The 4 Pharaohs on the Ransom label. They are from Columbus, Ohio.
What a great tune that bridges the gap between 20s jazz and 40s swing/big band. So much energy exudes from this song. It blows my mind that such a big sound can come out of a record 70+ years old.
Cannibal and The Headhunters are remembered for Land of 1000 Dances. They were also a prolific doo wop group that produced great stuff such as I'll Show You How To Love Me and Please, Baby Please.
Beautiful... This was originally released on Vangee in 63 and then released on Fraternity in 63 and 67. I used my Fraternity pressing for this video because it sounds much better but included pictures of the Vangee pressing for aesthetic sake.
