"I disagree with that answer!" I tried to have the kids learn how to do a video at the same time we were teaching how to 'disagree agreeably'. The students had so much fun, I appointed another student to play me. More teaching ideas: www.jilks.com/portfo lio
Prior to computer technology, Brian describes the manual process airlines employees used before computers. Before computers: who can imagine this? It involves stickers and is almost as bad as communicating with tin cans.
These are the beautiful sunsets that follow lovely warm days. The crickets serenade us in the dusk. The blues, grays, oranges and indigo colours provide a fluid canvas that serenades our eyes. The night time temperatures are wonderful for sleeping.
Ontario Hydro put out tenders to rebuild the dam and harness the power of the Bala Falls, as they have done in Bracebridge. The "Save the Bala Falls" dambusters team is fighting it, despite the contract having been signed. This project is one of many across the province to reduce our dependence upon coal-fired generating plants, which fulfills Mr. McGuinty's election promise.
The signs are all around us. Can you read them? These are photos of the signs in my photofolio. I must admit a fascination with signs: objects, images, symbols; logographic, and graphic. Reading signs is a great pre-reading skills to teach kids. Our brains are hard-wired to perceive images more than reading.
At the beginning of the week it was sunny. Today, Friday, Jan. 18, we have a wind chill factor, snow squalls and anticipate 15 cm of snow today, with that much more tonight! Yeah Canada! Yeah winter!
Muskoka weather, indeed all of Ontario, is very wet this season. The clouds are beautiful as they build up to a daytime storm July 24. I wish I was an artist and could paint them! I just missed a lightning bolt - what a dolt. I shut the camera off for just a minute!
Josephine loves games and loves to laugh. Object permanence, which can be seen when they look under blankets for hidden toys, is a great stage indicating cognitive development. Piaget did great work on this topic. http://www.jilks.com /articles/giftedarti cle.html#Piaget
This was a storm, Monday, Oct. 14th, 2008. It came up out of nowhere. The leaves blew across the yard. The sound of the rain is comforting. The waves were marked with white caps as the wind drove the water across the lake. In storms like this the water levels tip at one end.
My student created and videotaped their 2005 projects. One group presented in this split grade class, while the others taped it. They edited their own iMovies. More teaching ideas: www.jilks.com/portfo lio
This is the highlight of the Bala year: the Cranberry Festival. We sold 18,000 admission buttons and tons of cranberries. The profits go to community support: scholarships and bursaries. A good time was had by all: the growers, artisans, visitors, even the motorcyclists who tried to jump the queue! (see my dangerous driving vid!)
Setting the videocam on my tripod, July 26, 2008, I captured a 20 min. of a passing thunderstorm, trimming it up to couple of flashes, the loons calling, and that lovely sound of rain falling. It was about 5:00 a.m. as the light slowly dawned.
This is the celebration of my mother and father's lives. I wrote a memoir that paints a picture around our cancer fight. So many talk about fighting it, but there is some dignity in dealing the card you have been dealt. Our lives were framed by cancer from 2002 until 2007, when my father passed away. The book is entitled, Living and Dying with Dignity: a daughter's journey through long-term care.
Parry Sound-Muskoka candidates discussed vote swapping and strategic voting during the debate. Glen Hodgson's mike didn't work, and he handled that with panache, humour, and grace.
What a day on the lake. We had pop up sunshowers, boat traffic, kids screaming, and way too many boats for our 3 km of lake. To top it off, neighbours started setting fireworks at 11:00 p.m., then more neighbours thought it a good idea, too. It makes for a very long day for an old fart like me! I usually rise at 7:00 a.m. in 2008! What is the point of the rooster plume on the back of the PWC?!
