This is couple is poling upstream along the shallow banks of the Sambu River. Note our canoe has slowed down and will speed up once passed. This is a common courtesy on the river to prevent wakes. We are also in the Embera Wounaan Comarca as guests.
The piragua is long and can seat four men comfortably. Made from a single tree, it's so well balanced and heavy that entering and exiting does not tip the canoe. These boats last for decades and the seat in the back can be worn through completely, putting an end to its days.
