Paliku Cabin, within Haleakala Crater. 10 mile hike from the start of the Halemau'u trailhead. Quiet, peaceful - only the sound of the wind coming up Kaupo Gap...and the resident nene's
Trip up to Haleakala NP and during the day to see it - this is Maui's "active" volcano -
Atop this mountain is an awesome sunrise too - which i did the following morning - up at 0330 for that trip.... but cold and worth it.
Also up here is billions of dollars worth of space monitoring eqpt from colleges, and Defense.
Tough assignment eh? Maui duty station.
Haleakala is the volcano on Maui - and when active - it did the same thing the current volcanos on Hawaii do today - spew lava.
Lava cools and hardens and this is what it looks like..
