"I disagree with that answer!" I tried to have the kids learn how to do a video at the same time we were teaching how to 'disagree agreeably'. The students had so much fun, I appointed another student to play me. More teaching ideas: www.jilks.com/portfo lio
Prior to computer technology, Brian describes the manual process airlines employees used before computers. Before computers: who can imagine this? It involves stickers and is almost as bad as communicating with tin cans.
Spring brings an awakening of the earth and our spirits soar with the uplifted singing and winging of the wildlife. These are my photos of the creatures that inhabit our Muskoka. The healing power of nature soothes the soul.
These are the beautiful sunsets that follow lovely warm days. The crickets serenade us in the dusk. The blues, grays, oranges and indigo colours provide a fluid canvas that serenades our eyes. The night time temperatures are wonderful for sleeping.
Ontario Hydro put out tenders to rebuild the dam and harness the power of the Bala Falls, as they have done in Bracebridge. The "Save the Bala Falls" dambusters team is fighting it, despite the contract having been signed. This project is one of many across the province to reduce our dependence upon coal-fired generating plants, which fulfills Mr. McGuinty's election promise.
Here in Muskoka some towns (Huntsville) have experienced flooding with the extreme temperature fluctuations. Our dock is submerged and the water laps well up over the shoreline.
At the beginning of the week it was sunny. Today, Friday, Jan. 18, we have a wind chill factor, snow squalls and anticipate 15 cm of snow today, with that much more tonight! Yeah Canada! Yeah winter!
The Chamber of Commerce hosted a debate for the Parry Sound - Muskoka riding. Mr. McGarvey's 5-minute speech at the Parry Sound-Muskoka All Candidate's meeting in Gravenhurst at the Opera House. Oct. 1, 2008
Our Unit of Study, created by my student teacher, included the building of bridges, cooperation, and an integrated project. Groups shared knowledge and worked to create a bridge. More teaching ideas: www.jilks.com/portfo lio
My student created and videotaped their 2005 projects. One group presented in this split grade class, while the others taped it. They edited their own iMovies. More teaching ideas: www.jilks.com/portfo lio
I can't believe the size of these boats on our 3km lake: I don't know how the loons do not get beheaded. I shudder seeing little kids on the front and back of the powerful PWC. These are 2007/8 photos.
Here is evidence of wind-toppled trees. The power of the Bala Falls that empties from Lake Muskoka to the Moon River always impresses visitors. The sound of the rushing, roaring water demonstrates its power.
The sail boat has a hard time, as do the canoeists. The ducks and the turtle watch them zoom by. The novice skier could not get back up. The one kid never did get up. He sure tried hard and the boat operator yelled lots of advice! Funny how sound travels.
Muskoka weather, indeed all of Ontario, is very wet this season. The clouds are beautiful as they build up to a daytime storm July 24. I wish I was an artist and could paint them! I just missed a lightning bolt - what a dolt. I shut the camera off for just a minute!
I love the anticipation of a summer storm as the wind whips up the water, clouds form, and we all batten down the hatches hoping for summer rains, not tornadoes! In this video I caught Langmuir streaks.
The larger power boats cause such waves. The wee ducklings of Spring have, thankfully, grown. The nesting sunfish can survive the wash. But it wreaks havoc with the shoreline and habitat.
